Intro to Plitvice Lakes

Plitvice Lakes, or Plitvička Jezera, is arguably Croatia’s most beautiful national park and a UNESCO World Heritage site. There are 16 lakes - 12 upper and 4 lower - connected by over 90 stunning cascades and waterfalls. Wooden boardwalks wind across the lakes, creating an incredible hiking experience. It's the oldest and largest national park in the country, spanning around 300 km². Surprisingly, the lakes and waterfalls (the main draw for most visitors) make up only 1% of the park — the other 99% is lush forest that's also part of the reserve!

One of the most magical things about Plitvice is the lakes' vibrant turquoise colors that seem almost unreal, shifting from deep azure to emerald green depending on the light and season. This hue comes from the park's unique geology: the water, rich in dissolved calcium carbonate from the surrounding limestone and dolomite rocks, flows over travertine barriers (porous, ever-growing natural dams formed by mineral deposits).

As the water cascades and aerates, it releases CO2, causing the minerals to precipitate and build up these barriers over time (they grow about 1-3 mm per year!). The crystal-clear water then reflects sunlight off the white travertine beds below, enhanced by tiny microorganisms like algae and moss that add to the glow. It's like nature's own filter system, keeping the lakes pristine — when you see it in person, especially on a sunny day, it's impossible not to stop and stare!

Plitvice Lakes Hiking Programs

For hiking through this natural beauty, you have eight route options (called "programs"). They are A, B, C, E, F, H, and two versions of K (they're essentially the same circular route covering the full park, but one starts from Entrance 1 and the other from Entrance 2 - we'll get into the entrances next). Each program varies in time and length, ranging from 2 hours and 3,500 m (2.2 mi) to 8 hours and 17,500 m (10.9 mi). Check the hiking programs page on the official national park website for detailed distances and durations. I took program C, which in my opinion is the best for balancing quality and quantity of lakes and waterfalls.

Plitvice Lakes Entrances & Access

Entrances: 1 vs 2

There are two main entrances to the park, and each program starts at or correlates to one of them. For program C, you'll need to park (or get off the bus) and begin at Entrance 1 (the north entrance—Entrance 2 is the south one). Both entrances are on the same road, about 3 km apart. Large parking lots are available at each; fees are modest and vary by season (typically €1–2 per hour, higher in summer). When I visited off-season in November, it cost around $10 USD for the day - always check current rates as they can change.

How to Get to Plitvice

I highly recommend renting a car and driving there yourself. Sixt is a cheap and convenient car rental company with locations in many Croatian cities; we used them multiple times during our two months in Croatia without issues. If you prefer a bus, FlixBus is an easy and affordable option — you can book tickets online via their website or app and get the e-tickets sent to your phone. Book in advance, especially during peak season because seats can fill up quickly. On-bus purchases aren't typically available, so plan ahead. Buses drop off at either entrance, but catching the return can be tricky — there's no formal station, so pickups are on the roadside near the entrance, which might mean waiting on the highway shoulder.

For a more hassle-free experience, join an organized tour that includes round-trip transportation. Many day tours depart from major cities like Zagreb, Split, or Zadar, bundling bus or van rides with park entrance tickets and guided walks - perfect if you want everything handled for you!

Plitvice Lakes Tickets, Prices and Best Time to Visit

Plitvice is a great destination during both shoulder and peak seasons, from April to October. The park transforms dramatically by season — from lush green foliage to vibrant red leaves, cozy jackets to light shorts, and rushing waterfalls to gentle cascades. It all depends on what experience you're looking for! I only don't recommend late winter visits, as the falls often freeze or barely flow, and paths can become icy and slippery.

You can purchase tickets on the official national park website. It’s highly recommended to buy tickets in advance, as you must select a time slot and entrance (1 or 2) — daily tickets are limited to manage crowds. If slots are available on arrival, you can buy them at the park, but during summer they sell out fast, so plan ahead! Ticket prices vary depending on the month and time of day, and the prices are uniform for entry to the entire park, regardless of which hiking program you choose (all routes are included once you're inside):

Season Months Daytime Temperatures Adult Ticket Price Highlights & Notes
Spring April–May 16–19°C (61–66°F) €23 ($25 USD) Most dramatic waterfall flow from snowmelt & rains; thundering cascades, fuller lakes; mild & comfortable weather
Summer June–August 25–28°C (77–82°F) €40 ($43 USD) (€25/$27 USD after 4pm) Lushest, greenest scenery with peak vegetation; busiest & hottest—visit early morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds & heat
Autumn September–October 17–22°C (62–72°F) September: €40 ($43 USD) (€25/$27 USD after 3pm) October: €23 ($25 USD) Stunning fall foliage in reds & golds; fewer crowds for peaceful hikes; mild weather ideal for layering
Winter/Low Season January–March November–December (Cooler, variable) €10 ($11 USD) Quieter park; limited access (some upper lakes/paths may close); waterfalls reduced or frozen—not recommended for full experience

As I mentioned, I went during off-season in November, so the price was just €10 per person! Tickets include access to your selected entrance, plus any electric boat rides and panoramic train rides along your chosen program’s route. When buying, select your entrance based on your desired program (no need to pick the program itself—just the starting entrance). To reiterate, Program C begins at Entrance 1, so choose that if it's your pick. You won't be allowed into the other entrance, so decide wisely. Note that in off-season (especially winter), parts of the park like the upper lakes may close due to weather, limiting available programs.

Plitvice Lakes Program C Details

Program C is my absolute favorite as it's home to the largest and prettiest waterfalls in Plitvice. It's a circular route starting and ending at Entrance 1, covering about 8 km (5 mi) and taking 4–5 hours. It starts with a steep downhill switchback path into the limestone canyon of the Lower Lakes, then shifts to a stunning boradwalk hike past the park's most dramatic waterfalls. Highlights include Veliki Slap (translates to Great Waterfall — Croatia's tallest at 78 m high), Veliki and Mali Prštavac, the thundering Sastavci cliffs, and tons of smaller cascades connecting the four main Lower Lakes: Novakovića Brod, Kaluđerovac, Gavanovac, and Milanovac. The lakes are deep turquoise, with the cascades framing them beautifully as water spills from one to the next.

Midway, you'll hop on an electric boat for a peaceful 20-minute ride across the massive Lake Kozjak to the Upper Lakes side — a perfect little break to rest your legs. The line to get on can be pretty long in peak season, but it moves fast since boats run every 15–30 minutes. Once at the Upper Lakes, continue hiking the boardwalks past more waterfalls and serene views. To finish, catch the park's "panoramic train" (honestly, it's pretty much just a big bus with large windows) for a ride back to Entrance 1, mostly through forest with some nice cliff-edge views along the way.

The park has snack bars, drinks, and lunches at both entrances and inside the park at the main boat dock on Kozjak (plus bathrooms there—super handy midpoint break!). But everything's pretty pricey, so I definitely recommend packing your own water, snacks, and lunch in a small backpack. Pro tip: You can eat your packed meal on the benches at the Kozjak boat dock! Chill, refuel, and hop on the boat whenever you're ready!

Tips for Visiting Plitvice Lakes

Arrive at the park as early as possible to beat the crowds, especially if you're visiting during summer. From pictures I've seen and stories from others, it gets super busy then, making it a bit frustrating to stroll the boardwalks at your own pace. That's why I loved going in early, and during off-season — showing up at 9am meant no crowds, and the beautiful fall foliage mixed with lush greenery was a total bonus.

You can download the "NP Plitvička jezera" app (green icon with a white bear head outline). Pick your program, hit start when you arrive, and it'll track your spot, giving out info on waterfalls, lakes, and local flora/fauna as you pass them! I was shocked to learn through the app that there's three wolf packs in the park's forests! Also, if you're lucky, you might spot an otter in the water habitats — they're semi-nocturnal but can pop up during the day.

Waterfalls and fall foliage at a national park in Croatia

There you have it—everything you need to plan an unforgettable visit to Plitvice Lakes National Park! Whether you're chasing powerful spring falls, summer's vibrant greens, autumn's fiery foliage, or a peaceful off-season adventure like I had, this magical place won't disappoint. Wear comfy shoes, buy tickets early, pick Program C if you're debating, and get ready for one of Croatia's most breathtaking experiences. Safe travels, and enjoy every turquoise lake and cascading waterfall along the way!

For my nature lovers visiting Croatia, along with Plitvice, I recommend adding a trip to Krka National Park to see the longest tufa barrier in Europe, and visiting the stunning seaside city of Opatija where you can hike Mount Učka - a unique mountain featuring several trails and paragliding from the summit!
