Going to the top of Monte Brè
After hiking the Olive Grove trail in Lugano, we walked back to Castagnola and went a ways up the mountain to get to the funicular that goes up to the top of Monte Brè. When in Lugano I highly recommend taking a trip to this mountain top! We went to the Suvigliana funicular stop in Ruvigliana. It takes about 10 minutes to get to the top.
The funicular costs 25 euros per person, and includes a trip up and down the mountain. If you'd like, you can just purchase a trip up the mountain and walk back down a trail to the bottom. This walk would take about three hours - since we had just finished hiking the Olive Grove trail, we skipped this one and took the funicular back down.
The views during the ride on the funicular itself were amazing. I would highly recommend being first in line and sitting in the front row - this way you have a large window in front and one on each side to get the best views. If you are seated anywhere else the views are still amazing, but you can only see out of the side windows.
There are restaurants on the top of Monte Brè. We were not yet hungry but definitely needed a snack, so we stopped at a restaurant called 'Osteria Funicolare Monte Brè'. Their reviews look amazing and I'm sure their food and cocktails would have been fantastic. They had ice cream cones in a freezer that looked delicious and very refreshing, so we each grabbed one! They also have water bottles for a cheap price. While we were sitting there eating our ice cream and rehydrating, a plane flew right in front of us at the same height - it was amazing! We were so excited that we didn't have a chance to take out our phones and record it!
After exploring and enjoying the view, we took the ride back down the funicular and walked down the road, beautiful paths and some stairs to get back to Lugano. This walk was so beautiful and had extraordinary views. We saw many gorgeous mansions and could not even imagine being able to live there! When we got back we were exhausted and sweaty so we took a dip in the lake before heading back to our rental to shower.
